The challenges related to low tech

Low tech doesn’t mean no tech, it means finding the right level of technology for responding to the needs of the end user.

A low tech strategy also fosters innovation, as it requires that innovation doesn’t purely rely on technological solutions. The result is that innovation can be emphasized in other ways, such as through social, organizational, institutional, and civic means. This calls into question several key issues, such as the place of humans in technological innovation, the resilience against risks linked to climate change, and the place of industrial sovereignty in such an approach.

How we support you in your projects related to low tech

For more than 15 years, Alcimed has been helping its industrial and institutional clients on low tech projects aiming to identify the “right level” of technology to address the exact needs of a device, solution, or a service in a world where resources are not infinite.

The diversity of our clients, the geographic areas we explore, and the types of projects we carry out give us a global and in-depth understanding of the problems and challenges linked to low tech approaches.

Our missions cover diverse subjects such as low technology market studies, partner or supplier searches, technological analyses for industrial sectors, benchmarks of low tech processes, launches of low tech innovations, sectoral structuring, and many others!

Examples of recent projects carried out for our clients in low tech

      • Benchmark of a low tech process simplifying mechanical product qualification tests

We accompanied an industrial player who needed help to improve the simplicity of mechanical product qualification tests for its devices.

To do this, we conducted a benchmark of particularly inspiring industrial players on this subject that were developing simplified approaches in an economic and energetically favorable manner. For example, we explored the option of replacing lengthy friction analysis tests on a test bench with sober technologies involving acoustic analysis by operators.

This project allowed our client to achieve their energy and economic efficiency targets.

      • Developing a new low tech offer to simplify the renovation of concrete floor coverings

We supported a construction player in developing a new low tech offer to simplify the renovation of concrete floor coverings in buildings.

Starting from a robust and traditional technology, our team helped the client in defining their market strategy.

By exchanging with potential users and customers, our project helped to define a value proposition, to identify high-priority targets, and to validate the key success factors for entering the market.

      • Identification of low tech innovation opportunities for an energy management players

Alcimed worked with a multinational corporation specializing in energy management and automation solutions, aiming to innovate with simpler systems that enhance customer resilience.

To to explore innovation opportunities and inspire our client, our team conducted interviews with major industrial players across various segments, including Consumer Packaged Goods (Food & Beverages, Pharma etc), Water & Wastewater, Metal, Mining & Minerals, Chemicals, Oil & Gas, and Logistics, gathering both operational and strategic perspectives. The goal was to understand their low tech innovation practices, expectations, areas for improvement, and challenges related to resiliency. An action plan was then developed to identify areas where our client could make a significant impact with new simple products and solutions.

Thanks to our project, our client was able to conduct specific actions to enhance resiliency and address future needs in the industry.

      • State of the art of low-tech bioprocesses for an industrial player

Alcimed collaborated with a leading player specializing in the production, processing and distribution of materials for various industrial sectors. The company, as part of its research, was exploring alternative processes and specifically bioprocesses which in comparison to their current processes have relatively simple technological steps and equipment requirements.

Through a literature review, we identified low-tech biological processes and technologies, involving biomolecules or living organisms, for the production and recycling of materials. Additionally, through interviews, we conducted a targeted analysis of the most promising low-tech bioprocesses based on their performance levels, available materials, environmental benefits, and key industry players.

This exploration provided a comprehensive overview, allowing us to recommend the most promising low-tech bioprocesses and key players, identify priority materials and businesses to monitor, and highlight the main barriers to be addressed along with the critical R&D challenges.
