Competitive Analysis in the Healthcare Industry

30 years of experience supporting decision-makers in the healthcare industry
Our specialized team has been supporting everyday healthcare industry leaders in their competitive analysis projects.
Healthcare players trust us

What are the key stakes of a competitive analysis in the healthcare industry?
Competitive analysis can vary according to the objectives being pursued (checking the viability of a new project, understanding the intensity of competition in a market, reworking positioning and strategy, identifying acquisition targets, etc.) and the information sought. It typically aims to address the following key dimensions:
- Identifying direct and indirect competitors
- Characterizing competitors’ strengths, weaknesses and strategies
- Adapting to the competitive environment
How we support players in the healthcare industry with their competitive analysis projects
Founded in 1993, Alcimed is a consulting firm specialized in innovation and new business in life sciences. Spread over our 8 offices in the world (in France, Europe, Singapore and the USA), our team of 220 high-level explorers supports everyday corporate management and operational decision-makers (heads of marketing, R&D, innovation, strategy, CSR, industrial operations, etc.) in their innovation and new business projects.
In our competitive analysis projects for healthcare players, we support our clients in identifying opportunities and threats related to competition in their target markets.
And our activities in the healthcare sector are not limited to market analysis projects. The diversity of our clients (industrial players, SMEs innovative start-ups, public institutions, etc.), the subjects we deal with, and the geographical areas we explore, enable us to master a wide range of projects: developing commercial strategies, improving patient experience, implementing artificial intelligence in healthcare, …

Analyzing the competitive landscape of biosimilars for a biologic drug
We assisted one of our clients in the pharmaceutical field in carrying out regular competitive intelligence on the biosimilars of one of its drugs.
Before launching our monitoring, our team carried out a scoping stage by interviewing the various stakeholders involved in this monitoring, internally at our client’s site, in order to precisely define the elements of value for each (new regulations, announcements from manufacturers in the market, new partnerships published, new clinical results, etc.).
For more than 3 years, Alcimed has been leading the community of internal contributors (Market Access, Pricing, Regulatory teams) to publish a regular monitoring bulletin, synthetic and original!
-
Understanding competitors’ mRNA manufacturing processes for a pharmaceutical player
Alcimed helped a major pharma player to understand how their competitors in the space were able to accelerate their mRNA manufacturing process for phase 1 clinical trials.
To do so, our team mapped and evaluated the connected networks of CDMOs used to test and produce mRNA for preclinical testing transitioning into GMP samples needed for clinical trials. Then, we analyzed the development timelines and strategies used by competitors in order to conduct a gap analysis of our client’s current manufacturing process.
With these identified gaps, we built an action plan to increase mRNA manufacturing speed as well as provided recommendations to our client on key criteria for leapfrogging their competition.
-
Investigating competitor’s microbiome-related partners for a pharma player
Alcimed assisted a pharma company in better understanding its competitors’ external actions and partnerships made around the microbiome, in order to define their strengths, clarify the gaps and prepare the future.
Our team conducted extensive research to identify competitors and analyze their investments over the last 5 years, as well as investor relations, annual reports, press releases, co-patents, to map the ecosystem around the targeted players.
Through this investigation, we were able to provide our client with ID cards and key messages for each competitor, together with a key transversal analysis, including the identification of the main competitors, their most relevant partnerships in the 5 past years, and a clear vision of their investment history.

Conducting a competitive analysis to support the European launch of a fully automated blood group detection device
Alcimed supported a start-up in the launch of its innovative solution in Europe, helping it to better define the positioning of its product and a relevant marketing strategy. For this, two main steps were carried out during this project:
The identification and characterization of competing POCT solutions through an in-depth documentary analysis to map the competition and current practices, and through the conduct of interviews with influential people and experts in Europe (associations, specialized institutes)
The analysis of the main regulatory aspects in Europe and the questioning of our client’s market assumptions by analyzing the demand and the receptivity of its POCT solution via a literature review, the analysis of specialized databases, as well as through exchanges with around sixty people, potential clients and decision-makers.
Our project allowed our client to benefit from a complete analysis of the legislation, the receptivity of its product by its future users, obstacles and market levers and in practice, pricing, information on contracts and market sizing.
Our recommendations also enabled a prioritization of the markets according to their size and their receptivity, thus guiding the strategy for launching the solution.

Conducting a competitive analysis of the European osteoarthritis therapeutics market
In this project, our team conducted an in-depth exploration of the European osteoarthritis therapeutics market, to help a leading pharmaceutical company’s offer and positioning with their new regenerative medicine technique.
The investigation entailed the study of the competition, the available products and their prices, and the main treatments under development. Identification of direct and indirect competitors helped understand the opportunities and risks in the osteoarthritis therapeutics market, while being aware of key trends in the market.
Through the support of a tailored methodology, the project allowed to facilitate the product positioning within the market and the key market figures collected helped our client build a business plan and embark new investors in their project.
-
Assessing competition and market demand to secure the European launch of an automated abo point-of-care device
Our team worked with the CEO of a start-up to prepare for the launch of its automated ABO Point Of Care test device in Europe. Our client wanted to challenge and consolidate its assumptions about market supply and demand, in order to better define its marketing strategy and the positioning of its solution.
In 5 European countries, we began by analysing the competition and the reasons for the success/failure of other players, in order to validate the positioning of our client’s offering in its market environment. Our team then mapped and characterised the main blood transfusion segments, unmet needs, expectations and interest in the offering, and the positioning of our customer’s project from a demand perspective.
This investigative work enabled us to question and strengthen various market elements of our client’s business plan in order to validate the strategy for launching its offering in Europe.
-
Conducting market research and competitive analysis to prepare the launch of a new medical device in China
Our team supported a medical device player in preparing the launch of one of its products on the Chinese market. In order to finalize its launch roadmap, and to validate its market positioning, our client called on our team to conduct a market study on competing offers in China.
To do so, our team conducted an in-depth bibliographic review, complemented by interviews with buyers and users of medical devices such as our client’s, in order to gather their knowledge of the current market offering and their expectations with regards to a new solution entering the market.
Our market study enabled our client to refine the positioning of its product and finalize its targeting plan and launch sequence.
-
Driving a strategic and operational analysis to assess the evolution of competition
Our team supported a client in the healthcare sector in the preparation and facilitation of a prospective exercise of competitive evolution by teams around the world. Our client was in a particularly competitive market environment and wished to project with its teams the evolution of its competitors in order to work now on action plans of differentiation and gain or maintain market share.
To do so, our team first analyzed the portfolios of the major competitors and their dynamics, then analyzed the other players in the ecosystem, who could either develop specific solutions or technological bricks, or hold strong positions on a niche sub-segment of the market. We then analyzed potential new entrants, based on market trends.
Based on all this, our team co-defined prospective scenarios with our client, in preparation for the facilitation of a global workshop in a “win-game” format, enabling the teams to be involved in identifying the strongest threats and defining actions to be implemented now to prepare for them proactively.

Founded in 1993, Alcimed is an innovation and new business consulting firm, specializing in innovation driven sectors: life sciences (healthcare, biotech, agrifood), energy, environment, mobility, chemicals, materials, cosmetics, aeronautics, space and defence.
Our purpose? Helping both private and public decision-makers explore and develop their uncharted territories: new technologies, new offers, new geographies, possible futures, and new ways to innovate.
Located across eight offices around the world (France, Europe, Singapore and the United States), our team is made up of 220 highly-qualified, multicultural and passionate explorers, with a blended science/technology and business culture.
Our dream? To build a team of 1,000 explorers, to design tomorrow’s world hand in hand with our clients.
Alcimed carries out consulting missions in a variety of fields and on topics as diverse as the uncharted territories of our clients! Our projects and the methodological approaches we develop are based on the specific needs and contexts of our clients. We for example support our clients in defining their R&D or innovation strategy, in studying their target markets, in identifying and exploring new opportunities, in investigating innovative technologies, in defining their sales and marketing strategies, in integrating CSR or data science into their practices, or in imagining the future of their activities.
We’re not consultants, we’re explorers! Working with a consulting firm like Alcimed means living a different experience, with a team that always favors face-to-face meetings, goes beyond classic deliverables in favor of innovative ones (videos, data visualization tools, websites, collaborative platforms, …), that favors interactive animations in projects (escape games, quizzes, board games, role-playing games, video games, …), and that loves to make clients discover unusual places!
Beyond analyzing the web and literature, and large internal or external data lakes using data science, our consultants target and interact with key stakeholders: these can be clients, suppliers, partners, experts, opinion leaders, end-customers or patients, … and we challenge their viewpoints. This investigative work enables us to build our clear opinion at the crossroads between the viewpoints of the different stakeholders, and leads us to build recommendations to allow our clients to make decisions.
Competitive analysis, or competitive benchmarking, is a one-off market study focusing on competitors’ practices and situations. This analysis can serve a variety of purposes, such as optimizing corporate strategy, developing a marketing strategy or market access plan, or building a business plan.
In an ever-changing economic landscape, competitive analysis is an essential tool for companies seeking to maintain their competitive edge and offer attractive products and services. Among other things, it makes it possible to:
- Gain a detailed understanding of its ecosystem;
- Identify new market opportunities and threats;
- Anticipate trends and new customer needs;
- Evaluate its own position in relation to its direct or indirect competitors;
- Identify the arrival of a new competitor on the market;
- Adapt its value proposition to make it stand out from the crowd.
