What are the key stakes of a market analysis in the healthcare industry?
A market analysis is necessary to assess the market potential, or future sales, of a new product or service. It is one of the key elements of the business plan, and consequently of development financing. Conducting a market analysis requires an in-depth understanding of the product/service and its ecosystem, and a sound methodological framework. There are a number of key success factors for carrying out quality market analysis, three essential factors being:
- Ensuring the close relevance of the data collected to the product/service of interest
- Developing a qualitative analysis, beyond purely quantitative data
- Preferring a systemic and forward-looking approach, taking the entire ecosystem and its evolution into account
How we support players in the healthcare industry with their market analysis projects

Our market analysis case studies in the healthcare industry
-
Conducting a market study on a digital remote monitoring solution for outpatients following surgery
Alcimed provided support to a start-up offering eHealth remote monitoring services for outpatients following surgery.
Interacting with hospital sector stakeholders (general management, financial management, IT management, heads of department, etc.) enabled us to assess how this solution was received, its market potential and also the means of acquisition and the services most expected by potential buyers.
Our recommendation enabled us to position the solution in a more finely-tuned manner, and highlighted a series of core success factors, particularly in terms of partnerships and specific technical characteristics.
-
Sizing the market for a new technology in Barrett’s esophagus (progression to esophageal adenocarcinoma) and peritoneal carcinomatosis
We helped our client to understand the potential for a given technology in these patient segments through the deciphering of the current needs, ending up with an estimate of the market size in the 2 indications.
A deep understanding of patient management but also pathway allowed is to draw options to include such a new technology into different national reimbursement systems.
The analysis allowed our client to take a decision not only if the development of the technology should be further pursued but also helped the client to plan market access efforts in prioritized countries as well as helped in planning clinical trials.
-
Deciphering the type 2 diabetes market in Germany
For a medical device player wishing to enter the type 2 diabetes market in Germany, Alcimed analyzed the key stages of the patient pathway, from diagnosis to therapeutic follow-up, the stakeholders involved and the main barriers and uncovered patient needs.
As a result, we were able to identify that our client’s product in its current version did not meet market expectations, and recommended to our client the target characteristics that were essential, and those that were less of a priority, to successfully enter the German market.
-
Carrying out a market analysis to support market access in the Chinese syringe market
We helped a leading pharmaceutical company to evaluate the potential of a start-up company that had developed a new offering based on a connected bracelet for fertility measurement.
To do so, we performed a due diligence of the targeted start-up, analyzing in particular the user experience and the medical interest perceived by gynecologists for their product.
Our project validated our client’s interest in investing in the start-up and highlighted improvements in the marketing and commercialization of the device.
-
Conducting a market analysis to shape the positioning strategy of a leading electronics company in the AI medical imaging market
One of our clients, a world leader in providing technical solutions, wanted to reinforce their position in the healthcare sector.
To do so, they wanted to better understand the issues related to AI-based analysis of images in order to identify the opportunities in this market, the main players present, the needs and expectations of clients, and to thereby find a unique and differentiating position that responds to the segment’s expectations.
Alcimed first characterized the market of AI-based medical image analysis by mapping out the key challenges and analyzing the market’s value chain. Afterward, our team identified the market’s value sources and analyzed two major use cases.
Finally, we established recommendations for whether or not our client should become involved in this segment of the market.
-
Development of a healthcare manufacturer’s market entry strategy through a study of the European and US markets
Alcimed supported the innovation department of a medical device manufacturer in defining its strategy for entering the connected devices market.
Our teams began by analyzing this market and the current players in Europe and the United States, through a literature review and interviews with industry experts. We then identified the trends, risks and factors driving or blocking the market for connected devices, as well as specific use cases, in order to deduce key success factors for our customer.
This work enabled our customers to gain an overview of the market for connected healthcare devices, and to identify the key actions they needed to put in place to develop their strategy.
-
Defining a patient-centric positioning strategy in the European diabetes market through market analysis
Patient centricity is increasingly integrated into the overall strategy of our clients in healthcare. In this context, our team supported a pharma laboratory which wanted to define the positioning of its treatment against diabetes, based on the new results of clinical trials of its product and the offers of the competition.
To do this, we first carried out a market study that gave our client a clear understanding of the local healthcare system in the target countries. Following this study, we were able to recommend the best positioning scenario applicable to the targeted European countries, while integrating into a patient-centric approach. Ultimately, we were able to offer our client a new patient-centered model and formalized alternative positioning scenarios for their treatment.
-
Conducting a market study to support a pharmaceutical company in its transition to a new value proposition
One of our clients, a player in the pharmaceutical industry, was looking to make a transition to a new value proposition likely to induce profound changes in its commercial functions.
We helped them broaden and challenge their current vision by exploring the models of other companies, notably through a comparative market analysis and sharing of experiences, and by analyzing the needs and expectations of their customers.
Our team organized several workshops with our client’s teams in order to produce a complete set of specifications for the future business and the associated roadmap for the upcoming transition.

This investigative work enables us to build our clear opinion at the crossroads between the viewpoints of the different stakeholders, and leads us to build recommendations to allow our clients to make decisions.
Our team consists of 220 passionate individuals, with degrees from the best international schools and universities , most possessing a dual education in science/technology and business or data science. More than a third of our consultants have an international and multicultural background, and we master more than 20 languages and cultures, including the world’s most widely spoken ones: English, Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Japanese.
A market analysis is a study that provides an understanding of the offer (competitors and existing offers) and demand (potential buyers and users) of a target market. This analysis also aims to estimate the potential of the market and decipher trends (regulatory developments, changes in customer patient behavior, arrival of a new technology, etc.). A market study validates the opportunity of entering a target market, and assesses the level of sales you can generate to support your decision or convince investors.
One possible segmentation is the distinction between primary and secondary market analysis:
- Primary market analysis is based on the direct collection of data from the target audience, providing access to insights that are specific and difficult to access, and tailored precisely to the client’s question.
- Secondary market analysis involves the use of existing data available in articles, reports or public databases.
Alcimed combines primary analyses to provide the client with high-quality, tailored insights, with the most relevant secondary analyses.
